Over the past 25 years there's been a fundamental change in the way vehicle manufacturers have looked at automotive sound. Once an afterthought, automotive sound systems are now one of the primary ways that vehicles, especially premium models, are differentiated between each other in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
In-dash CD players are usually standard on even the most basic models, and systems featuring cutting-edge surround-sound technology and fully integrated GPS navigation systems (currently found in about 8% of new vehicles) are touted on flagship models. And as the complexity and sophistication of these systems have moved forward, their control centers have been integrated into these vehicles in such a way that they have become virtually impossible to upgrade or replace.
This has led the aftermarket to develop a new generation of interface components that will allow audio enthusiasts to retain their factory head units, which in many instances include navigation functionality and are integrated with other vehicle systems such as the HVAC controls, while adding even more powerful amplifiers, higher-quality speakers, and larger subwoofers, all in the quest to attain sonic nirvana.
These components, often referred to as OEM integration components, go far beyond simple line-level adapters and work differently than conventional aftermarket components because of the way many OEM head units and amplifiers are designed. In many factory systems, the audio signal employs custom equalization to match its output to the location and frequency response of the speakers and subwoofers selected, thus allowing the designers to employ lower cost components while providing high-performance sound.
